Getting involved in a Learning Disability England Think Tank is a great way to have your voice heard and help improve the care and support people with a learning disability receive.
Learning Disability England’s Think Tanks give members the chance to talk about what is important to them.
They also allow members to talk about what they’d like to change to improve the lives of people with a learning disability.
How does a Think Tank work?
Together, we choose a topic or problem we would like to talk about.
Members work by themselves or in groups to think about the topic or problem and provide their thoughts on it.
We collect everyone’s thoughts together to understand what members think as a whole about the topic or problem.
We use all the information we collect to write a report about the topic or problem discussed.
We always share the report with all our members.
Sometimes we also share the report with the public, the government and organisations that work with and support people with a learning disability.
Our Think Tank reports can help improve how Learning Disability England works and our services.
Our reports can also push the government and other organisations to do more for people with a learning disability.
Our first think tank
In July 2019, we decided to set up our first Think Tank.
It focused on social care for people with a learning disability.
Social care is support that helps you do what you want and need to do.
This topic was chosen because members said it is important to their lives.
We also chose this topic because the government said it will start to ask people what they think good social care should be like.
As part of the Think Tank, we all talked about:
- What kinds of situations or support help you live a good life?
- What does good social care look like?
- What gets in the way of good social care?
After everyone’s thoughts were collected, we wrote this report about social care.
We are also using what everyone said to support our work with Social Care Future.
It is a growing group of people across the country who want to improve social care for everyone.
A member and spokesperson for Learning Disability England who took part in our social care Think Tank is Vicky.
“Social care isn’t just about older people; it’s about everyone. It’s about people of all walks of life getting the right healthcare and support when they need it.”
