Go back to training and support
Support Workers do an incredibly important job. Their support can open up people’s worlds. It can help people have more choice, build relationships, try new things, be part of their community and live the life they want.
But Support Workers are not always valued as much as they should be. And to give great support, people need to feel supported, valued and inspired too. That’s why we created A Guide to being a Gr8 Support Worker.
The guide has been written by over 50 people who are passionate about making great support happen. They include self-advocates, Support Workers, family members, managers, chief executives, researchers and other people working in social care. Together, they have shared ideas, experiences, stories and practical tips about what great support really looks like. It has 5 main chapters:
- Why are Support Workers so important?
- Getting to know the people you support.
- Supporting people to live good lives.
- Making people’s rights a reality.
- Nurturing Support Workers.
This isn’t a guide to sit on a shelf. It’s a guide to use.
Self-advocates and families can use it to talk about the support they want and what matters to them.
Support Workers can use it to think about their own practice and what they could do differently.
Teams can use it to start conversations, share ideas and learn together.
Organisations can use it in inductions, team meetings, supervision and training.
