The Framework

The Good Lives Framework lays out what people tell us they need to live well.

This forms each of the frameworks seven chapters.

The framework reflects various aspects of life such as housing, communication, relationships, advocacy, employment, and health and by doing so we hope to support a more holistic approach to policy formation.

Each chapter says:

  • What people have said about why it’s important
  • What the European Convention on Human Rights says about this
  • Ideas we can work on together to make change
  • What good might look like
  • Who do we enrol/engage
  • Next steps

We hope the framework will inform policymaking by showing clearly the needs and aspirations of people with learning disabilities, enabling policymakers to develop more informed and effective policies to address these needs.

It also highlights the challenges that get in the way of people with learning disabilities leading their good lives and offers some hopeful examples where these challenges have been overcome.

The second edition of the framework has been refreshed and renewed for 2025.
