Learning Disability England Statement – The Terminally Ill Adults Bill

This post will be talking about the Terminally ill Adults Bill and the conversations around it.

It is going to mention some subjects that people might find upsetting, including: terminal illness, death/dying, Assisted Dying and DNARs.

This week MPs in Parliament will vote on a new law about Assisted Dying  – it is called the Terminally ill Adults Bill.

It is a new law that says people who are expected to die soon can get help to end their life.

This is a big decision that MPs are making.

There is very little easy read information available but we have created some HERE.

Other organisations have their own views – see what Disability Rights UK said HERE

Some of our members might agree with Disability Rights UK, some might not.

We don’t think we as an organisation can speak for all members about an issue like this because people have their own views.

We suggest that you share the easy read and write to your MP quickly to let them know what your personal view is.

Whatever decision MPs take we will try and make sure that people’s voices are heard at every stage of the Bill going through parliament.

We know that some members are worried about consent, and that some members are thinking back to what happened with DNARs during Covid and are worried about that.

We also know that some members are worried about what this means for people with high support needs or who cannot make the decision themselves.

At the moment the Bill says, only people with capacity would be able to make the decision so it doesn’t apply to people who cannot make the decision themselves.

We also know some people think it is a good thing to change the law in a way that puts people in control.

If you’d like to share your views with us or if we can help or support in any way, please let us know.
