Positive Behaviour Support – What is your experience?

What this is about?

Neurodiverse Collective has started a campaign about Positive Behaviour Support (PBS).

You can read more about the campaign here.

Positive Behaviour Support is a way of working that aims to understand people’s behaviour especially if someone’s behaviour is challenging to other people.

The Members Representative Body thought about the campaign and what it means for Learning Disability England members.

What the Representative Body decided about what Learning Disability England does next:

This campaign is starting a conversation about Positive Behaviour Support – it says there are better ways of supporting autistic people and that PBS is wrong for autistic people.

As member Representatives we are not taking a position on this – we do not know enough about all members’ experiences of PBS yet.

We think there will be different responses to this campaign, we respect that and encourage all Learning Disability England members to share those.

Learning Disability England wants to make sure that people with learning disabilities, their families and paid supporters can have a say about this.

It is important that people with learning disabilities’ experiences are heard in all policies or debates that affect their lives.

We will work with Neurodiverse Collective to share easy to read information and find ways to help people share what they think about Positive Behaviour Support.

We are concerned that if there is such strong criticism of PBS among neurodivergent people, the same strength of feeling might exist with people with a learning disability – but it hasn’t been heard.

What next?

Can you share examples of experiences of Positive Behaviour Support?

This can be good or bad experiences.

You can be anonymous – you do not have to share your name.

The stories will be used to help decide what we do next and may also be used as part of the campaign website/report.

We will host a small meeting with Neurodiverse collective in the summer to share thoughts about this – we will share the date soon.
