What is Good Lives?

Work on Good Lives really started in 2020, when a group of 40 self advocates came together in Birmingham.

They spoke about what it will take for everyone with learning disabilities to be able to live their good life.

Learning Disability England knows it holds a privileged position as it hears the lived experiences of a wide range of people and connects with many members and non-members.

We wanted to use those connections and bring together everything we hear, people’s ideas for action and the good practice we know is happening.

We believe that by sharing these examples we can inspire each other to continue to create more and better opportunities for people with learning disabilities, their families, and our communities.

These examples help form the Good Lives Framework (link here )

Though it is even more than a framework – it is a vision and a goal for everyone to aim for.

Good Lives focuses on hope, solutions and highlights what we all stand for.

Of course we recognise and respect the many challenges people face and the failings – Good Lives does not ignore those but uses them as a reason to keep acting and expecting more.

Learning Disability England hosts Good Lives but do not control it. It belongs to the community.
