The Casey Commission is looking at how we make social care work for everyone.
This is an update on what we know about the commission’s work and ways to get involved.
When Andy Burnham became the Prime Minister he said social care was important.
He asked Baroness Casey to finish her work on the Commission earlier and share their final report in the summer next year.
The Commission are holding the Big Conversation to help people share their ideas.

The Big Conversation is happening in two ways:
Take part as individual online
The first is for individuals to take part in using make.org
This is a website where you can share your ideas and vote on other people’s ideas.
They are thinking about the question:
When we are old or disabled, or have a serious illness, who should support us and how?
The Commission are making some easy read instructions on how to use the make.org website. We will share that when its published.
Take part in interviews
The commission is working with partners to speak to different communities directly about their experience.
Learning Disability England is supporting people with learning disabilities and their families to take part.
Skills for Care will be speaking to support workers. They will tell us more about this soon.
Organisations
The Commission are thinking about how organisations can take part in this conversation and will update everyone soon
What’s Next?
After they collect all of the proposals on MAKE.org and finish interviewing they will set up Citizen Panels to talk about everything they’ve found.
Citizen Panels are people selected from the general public and brought together to think about an issue.
There are two more stages for engagement, they are being planned now.
We think they will look similar to stage 1.

- Collecting Stories
We are looking for people to share their stories.
We want to hear about:
- What makes you social care support work?
- What gets in the way?
- What does your life look like when your support is good?
We are looking to hear stories from a lived experience perspective.

Organisational members are welcome to send stories they already have, especially ones that show what makes a difference to people.
We want to hear what makes a difference so people can live a good life rather than just service models. Service models are important but we know that people’s lives are more than services.
- Interviews with individuals with certain experiences
Learning Disability England is working with National Voices to help some people take part in interviews and focus groups.
The commission is looking to speak to people who fit into the following groups:
- People and families who have recently been through transition from children to adult social care
- People with profound and multiple learning disabilities and their families
- People with severe learning disabilities whose behaviour may be described as challenging, and their families
We have limited spaces available and you will be paid for your time.

- Working with the Commission
Last week some organisational members met about the Big Conversation.
Members shared concerns about accessibility and inclusion
Some members said they would share data and evidence they have around community support or early help, social value, context and ‘high cost’ social care for people with learning disabilities who have bigger support packages.
We agreed we would write to:
- Yvette Cooper, The Health and Social Care Minister
- Sarah MclInton, The Chief Social Worker
- the Casey Commission and Ipsos who are leading the Big Conversation
The letters will share the ideas, questions and concerns raised in the meeting.
Learning Disability England encourages members to get involved with the work of the commission.
The ideas being shared now could help shape what social care looks like in the future and could matter to you, your family, your friends and the people you care about for years to come.
